Notes From A Songwriter
Discovered by Midge Ure whilst playing the live circuit in Bristol and Bath, Indi Forde subsequently worked with producer Sam Williams (Supergrass, Plan B) and session drummer Clive Deamer (Radiohead, Portishead) to create his first solo album, “Silverscreens”. He has supported Dina Carroll and Willy Mason and performed on the same stages as Jessie J and Tom Jones.
A prolific writer, he has collaborated with Torqux (MTA Records) with their single “Silhouette” receiving plays on Radio 1Extra and KissFM by MistaJam and DJ EZ, and featuring in the 5th season of E4’s Misfits.
Indi came 2nd place in the prestigious Open Mic UK Grand Final held at Birmingham NEC.
The front man of banging pop, funk eclectic trio Indi and The Vegas, they have been described as Queen meeting Prince and jamming through the Red Hot Chili Peppers greatest hits. They released their last full album, The Getaway, in 2021, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Zaro Vega (PARTYNEXTDOOR, Jeleel).
"There are so many ways to do this but I find what works best for me is to get a guitar, or the instrument you’re most proficient on, and bash out a few chords. Mood dictates what kind of vibe comes out in your strumming, chord choices etc, so just go with that. Music is just capturing emotion."
It’s very rare that I’ll sit down and try to write about something specific for the original inspiration round. I’d find that way too restrictive and forced personally, and I know from experience I’ll get writers block and then the pressure builds and that song is never getting finished. If there’s something on my mind that’s bothering me or making me happy, that will inevitably come out, so you’ve just got to let go and let the force flow through you!
From there I’ll sing a melody over the top, usually just nonsense but it lets me get the amount of syllables down for a good melodic and rhythmic flow, and I can just replace the words later. I’ll then take it to the band and we’ll jam it out. Getting other opinions and ideas is vital, which is probably why so many singer-songwriters have co-writers.
Getting a voice note or putting it in a DAW is the next step, so I can listen a few times without having to play it, which frees up a bit of brain RAM.
From there I’ll start thinking about the lyrics. For the most part, at least the chorus will pop out in the jamming phase, or the initial strumming sesh. So I’ll start to elaborate on that and flesh out the verses along that theme, sing some counter melodies etc.
Out of hundreds of songs I’d say I’ve only written 30ish I’m happy with, so the key is to keep writing, which will improve your skill and don’t be afraid to let a crap song go, or even cannibalise it and use it as a starting point for something better."
